New York City Subway Encounters with Wildlife: Tales and Impressions
New York City, often referred to as 'one of the greatest cities in the world' and the subway a labyrinth of passages and platforms, is not only home to bustling street life and towering skyscrapers but also a fascinating urban wildlife hub. As I explored the city's subterranean world, I came across some unique and intriguing encounters, particularly with the elusive subway dwellers. This article recounts my experiences, offering a blend of fact and fiction that highlights these interactions.
Encountering a Gigantic Subway Rat
What was perhaps the most notable encounter I had was last week. While waiting for a train, a massive rat caught my attention. It was as large as a fire tiller truck and had an impressive size, almost resembling a giant elephant. Its eyes glinted like sharp, glowing embers, much akin to a fire tiller truck's headlights.
Noticing something was amiss, the rat inspected its rear end with a sense of concern. It had a noticeable mark, likely from a wild cat or a hobo. Despite the damage, the rat seemed unbothered, perhaps even amused, by its appearance.
Subway Rats as aids to Commuters
Another, more whimsical encounter took place one night while I waited for a train that was extremely delayed. In a stroke of imagination, a rat on the tracks approached me, looked up with its beady eyes, and said in a surprisingly clear tone: 'There’s a delay on this line. Hop on my back and I’ll get you home for 5.' Although the idea was humorous, it was also intriguing to see the bond that might exist between human commuters and these often-dreaded subway creatures.
The Urban Opossum
On other occasions, I found myself second-guessing whether the creatures I encountered were rats or simply large opossums. The size and shape were indistinctly similar to a small cat, yet opossums are indeed known to be in the area. These creatures, often a sight at Texas Hill Country, have made a comfortable home in the subterranean world of New York City, thriving on the abundance of food and trash.
A Visit with Mayor DeBlasio
In a surreal and genuinely heartening moment, one night, Mayor Bill DeBlasio, during his tenure, managed to make his way into the subway system. While this encounter could be deemed a bit of a miracle, it does add to the mystique of the subway. It's unlikely, but one can't help but imagine such an event could be true, adding a whimsical and almost surreal twist to the subway experience.
Encounters with urban wildlife in the New York City subway add a fascinating layer to city life. While these stories may be tales of imagination, they reflect the intriguing and sometimes unexpected aspects of life in one of the most densely urbanized environments in the world. Whether a monumental rat, a helpful rat, or a sighting of the mayor, these experiences enrich the narrative and vividly illustrate the interplay between humans and the environment in the world's largest cities.
