Guidelines for Respecting Flight Attendants: What Passengers Should Not Ask

On a flight, the airline staff, particularly the flight attendants, play a key role in ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers. As a flight attendant myself, I have encountered a wide range of questions and sometimes even inappropriate remarks from passengers. Here, I will share some insights and guidelines for respectful conduct and what passengers should and should not ask flight attendants.

What Not to Ask Flight Attendants

There are a few topics and questions that can be highly sensitive or even illegal for passengers to ask a flight attendant. The following are a few examples:

Potentially Dangerous and Sensitive Questions

1. Referring to Bomb or Gun

It is crucial never to make a reference to any potentially explosive or dangerous items, such as a bomb or gun, whether jokingly or seriously. Doing so can result in the quickest way for a flight to divert and for you to face legal consequences. This is also monitored closely by the airline and airport authorities.

2. Requests for First Class Seats

Poorly phrased requests for free seat upgrades or first-class seats can sometimes come across as rude or presumptuous, especially if there are available seats in economy. Always be polite and make requests for seat upgrades in a manner that shows respect to the crew.

3. Asking for Personal Items

Requests for specific beverages or food items, such as peach nectar, frozen margaritas, or claiming a blanket or seat cushion upon landing, should be made in a manner that reflects the same level of consideration and respect for the crew and the flight.

4. Demanding Assistance or Services

Asking for help with heavy bags, or making orders unnecessarily, can put undue pressure and burden on the flight attendants during busy periods. It's important to keep requests respectful and mindful of the crew’s work.

How to Treat Flight Attendants Respectfully

On the brighter side, flight attendants are often more than willing to go the extra mile for passengers who treat them with kindness and respect. Here are some tips to make your interaction with flight attendants smooth and enjoyable:

Respectful Conduct and Social Etiquette

1. Always Use Courteous Language

Simple gestures like saying "please" and "thank you" can make a significant difference. These small words show gratitude for the service rendered by the flight attendants and can lead to a more pleasant interaction.

2. Keep Discussions Professional and Positive

Avoid bringing up sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or personal beliefs that could lead to heated debates or conflicts. Similarly, avoid discussing serious issues like engine failures or other safety concerns that might cause unnecessary panic.

3. Participate in Voluntary Acts of Kindness

While not mandatory, small acts of kindness, such as asking for a better seat or a complimentary snack if you are large and in need, can be appreciated. Sometimes, a polite and sincere request can lead to unexpected treats or assistance from the crew.

For example, during one flight, a passenger seated next to me had a seat belt extender on their seat belt. Initially confused, I wanted that extender. Instead of asking directly, when the flight attendants were already preparing for the door closure, I made a lighthearted request, pretending to be upset about needing it for the briefing. This led to the flight attendant offering me a better seat and even inquiring if other crew members would let me have it. While not always successful, I learned that humor and politeness can go a long way in making your flight more enjoyable.

4. Maintain a Positive Attitude

Even if the flight is stressing you out, try to maintain a positive attitude and be considerate of the professional responsibilities of flight attendants. Treat their criticism or requests in a respectful manner, as they are focused on your safety and wellbeing.

In conclusion, keeping yourself in check and treating flight attendants with respect can make your journey smoother. Remember, every little kindness counts and can lead to a better experience, both for you and the crew. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a respectful and safe flight experience.
